The proposal for a revamped European Super League (ESL) has re-emerged, with reports suggesting that as many as 50 teams could be enticed to take part in the competition, scheduled to commence in 2025. Kieran Maguire, an expert in football finance, is of the view that the proprietors of Liverpool and the remaining ‘big six’ clubs in the Premier League are eager to be included in this new endeavour, notwithstanding the potential backlash from their supporters.
Maguire has articulated his belief that the proprietors of Liverpool, Manchester United, and the other six clubs would be enthusiastic about joining the Super League, although they are cognizant of the adverse reaction from their fans which such a decision is likely to elicit. He has also intimated that the primary version of the Super League may not encompass English clubs, and the participation of teams from other nations, such as Real Madrid and Barcelona, may prompt English clubs to reconsider their position.
Despite the six English clubs that were initially intended to partake in the ESL publicly voicing their opposition to the revised edition of the tournament, it is imperative that they maintain their resolve in this matter. Even though FSG, the proprietors of Liverpool, seem to be adopting a more cautious approach this time around, it is improbable that fans in England would embrace the concept.
Rather than pursuing the glamour and financial advantages of a revamped Super League, it is essential for Liverpool to uphold the values and traditions that have endeared the club to its fan base for decades. Despite the opposition faced by the proposed Super League in 2021, there remains a possibility of its realization. In such an eventuality, it is crucial for FSG and other club proprietors to prioritize the interests of their supporters and adhere to the principles that define their clubs.
