The 2024 Grammy Awards were an exceptional evening of celebration and recognition for an array of musical talents. Pop sensation Miley Cyrus and indie rock group boygenius were among the early victors, attaining some of the highest accolades in the music industry.
Miley Cyrus clinched the award for best solo pop performance with her empowering anthem “Flowers”. Accepting the prestigious trophy from the esteemed Mariah Carey, Cyrus expressed her relief at not missing the moment her name was called, humorously stating, “I could have missed the award, that’s fine, but not Mariah Carey!”
Esteemed comedian Trevor Noah, hosting for the fourth occasion, brought his characteristic wit and humour to the event, commencing the show on CBS with the quip that it was “the only concert that starts on time”. The evening also showcased memorable performances, such as a duet of “Fast Car” by country singer Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman, eliciting delight from nominees such as Taylor Swift and Jelly Roll in attendance.
Speaking of Taylor Swift, the 34-year-old artist, amidst the world’s highest-grossing tour, endeavoured to clinch an unprecedented fourth album of the year award with “Midnights”. This placed her in competition with a female-led field including SZA, the most-nominated artist of the evening, and the indie rock band boygenius. The trio emerged victorious, claiming Grammys for rock performance, rock song, and alternative music album for “The Record.”
Reflecting on the win, Julien Baker of boygenius expressed, “All I ever wanted to do in my life was be in a band. Music is the language I used to find my family.” The triumph for boygenius continued during the night, with Phoebe Bridgers exclaiming, “This is so incredible. We are screaming backstage,” upon clinching a third trophy in a row.
Significantly, women were prominently featured in the 2024 Grammys field, with just one man, Jon Batiste, among the eight nominees for the album prize. The diversity of nominees included artists such as Olivia Rodrigo and Lana Del Rey, with music from the blockbuster “Barbie” movie receiving 11 nominations and record of the year for Billie Eilish’s ballad “What Was I Made For?”
The best new artist category presented a diverse range of talent, including rapper Ice Spice, country singer Jelly Roll, R&B and pop singer Victoria Monet, singer-songwriter Coco Jones, and folk-pop singer Noah Kahan. Winners at the Grammys were selected by the musicians, producers, engineers, and other professionals who constitute the Recording Academy. The group has made efforts to diversify its membership in recent years by inviting more women and people of colour to its ranks.
The 2024 Grammy Awards were undoubtedly an evening of triumph and celebration for artists across various genres, showcasing the diversity and talent that continues to shape the music industry.
