Water bills in the United Kingdom are poised to increase in April, but there are several measures that individuals can take to mitigate their expenses and become more mindful of water usage. According to Liz Hunter, Director at Money Expert, the increase in water bills is attributed to the aging water system, costly sewage cleanups, erratic precipitation, and stricter environmental regulations in the UK.
Here is advice from a water industry specialist on how to reduce your water bills and support water conservation:
1. Consider transitioning to a meter
If you are currently paying an estimated ‘unmetered charge’, switching to a water meter can result in cost savings by paying based on your actual water usage. It is important to assess your household size and water consumption before making this change. The Consumer Council for Water’s calculator can help you determine if transitioning to a meter would be financially advantageous.
2. Reduce shower time
Limiting your shower time to five minutes or less can lead to savings of over 28,000 litres of water and £100 in energy and water expenses per year. Using a timer and installing a low-flow showerhead can facilitate this endeavour.
3. Prefer showers to baths
Opting for showers over baths whenever feasible can significantly decrease both water usage and energy costs. An average eight-minute shower consumes 96 litres, whereas a full bath uses 80 to 100 litres.
4. Turn off the tap while brushing teeth
Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth can conserve approximately six litres of water per minute, resulting in substantial water savings over time.
5. Select water-efficient appliances
When purchasing washing machines, dishwashers, or toilets, seek out water-efficient models with the Water Efficiency Label (WEL), which assesses the appliance’s water consumption efficiency from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient).
6. Check for eligibility for financial support
Households with low income may qualify for social tariffs and hardship funds provided by water companies across the UK. Each scheme has specific eligibility criteria, and it is worthwhile to verify if you are eligible for assistance.
7. Engage with your supplier
If you are experiencing difficulty in paying your water bills, it is recommended to engage with your water supplier to explore payment plans or potential debt relief options. Citizens Advice or the Consumer Council for Water can offer additional guidance and support in these matters.
By implementing these recommendations, individuals can not only economize on their water bills but also contribute to water conservation initiatives in the UK. It is crucial to be mindful of water usage, particularly in light of the forthcoming increase in water bills.
