Mercedes-Benz is preparing to implement substantial revisions to its electric vehicle range. According to Christoph Starzynski, Vice President of Car Engineering at Mercedes-Benz, the aerodynamic egg-shaped design seen on models such as the EQS and EQE will soon become a thing of the past. The brand intends to adopt a more conventional styling, as demonstrated by the recently revealed CLA concept, featuring a prominent grille and a more traditional three-box design.
Alongside the new aesthetic, there will also be adjustments to the nomenclature of Mercedes’ electric vehicles. As the company shifts to an EV-exclusive brand, the familiar ‘EQ’ tag may become obsolete. This means that future electric vehicles could return to utilizing the traditional letter-based naming system (C, E, S, and G) to signify their size and segment.
Christoph Starzynski provided insight on the impending changes, remarking, “We have received that feedback, and we are taking it seriously. Observing the [design] language in the Concept CLA, and perhaps looking a bit further into the future, I believe we can certainly anticipate adaptations to that.”
Regarding the nomenclature transition, Christoph clarified, “No, it’s going to be a ‘C’. ‘EQ’ is a very robust brand for electric technology, so we will certainly maintain it. Now the question lies in nomenclature. How do you name the cars? Ultimately, our goal is to go fully electric. Therefore, in due course, the transition will occur naturally.”
There are even indications that the electric version of the G-Class could be the first to undergo a badging switch.
The release of these changes has been met with positive reception, with many expressing enthusiasm for the prospect of a more conventional design for Mercedes’ electric vehicles. Some have characterized the current design language as “beta” and “fluidic,” and are eagerly anticipating a more classic and sophisticated aesthetic for future models.
This announcement signifies a substantial shift for Mercedes-Benz as they continue to progress towards a fully electric future. Through these changes, the brand seeks to uphold its strong presence in the EV market while embracing a more timeless and iconic design for their electric vehicle lineup.
As a result of these adjustments, it is evident that the future of Mercedes electric vehicles is poised to take on a completely new appearance, further solidifying the brand’s dedication to innovation and advancement in the electric vehicle sector.
