During my formative years, sports and aerobic activities have always been integral components of my lifestyle. However, as I matured, the notion of devoting increased time to gymnasium activities was never within my contemplation. The prospect of engaging in weightlifting evoked trepidation within me, as I harboured the misconception that it would result in a “bulky” physique.
Nonetheless, my perception underwent a radical shift upon reaching the age of 45. I began encountering the manifestations of perimenopause, including weight gain and hot flashes, which left me discontented with my physical appearance. Extensive research led me to the conclusion that resistance training held the key to resolving these issues, prompting me to embark on an endeavour. It was at this juncture that I became acquainted with Joe Wicks, a distinguished fitness instructor and author, and his 12-week high-intensity interval training (HIIT) regimen. The initial phase was characterised by rigorous HIIT sessions, subsequently complemented by resistance training utilising dumbbells, and ultimately, barbell work and additional weightlifting. Astonishingly, I discovered an inherent affinity for this regimen, embracing the art of weightlifting with great enthusiasm.
Upon acquiring a degree of confidence within the gymnasium environment, I commenced participating in powerlifting competitions and achieved a personal record by deadlifting 275 pounds. The subsequent exhilaration engendered a trajectory of continual personal development. I diversified my pursuits by experimenting with CrossFit exercises, including Olympic lifts and functional fitness routines.
My odyssey has been moulded by four pivotal factors:
1. Embracing the tutelage of a coach to hone my lifting technique and avert injuries.
2. Adhering to a structured program conducive to progressive development, thereby eschewing haphazard and unproductive workouts.
3. Unswervingly pursuing a balanced dietary regimen, prioritising nutritious fare whilst permitting a measure of flexibility.
4. Galvanising and supporting women, particularly those in their fifties, to embrace strength training and demonstrating that it is never too late to commence this pursuit.
I am presently committed to empowering menopausal women via personalised training, physical exercise, and nutritional counsel, facilitating their navigation through this life stage. The pervasive reticence surrounding menopause has impelled me to become an advocate for raising awareness and instructing women in holistic symptom management.
At the age of 52, my focus has pivoted toward accentuating longevity and self-sufficiency, surpassing the confines of mere fitness objectives. I aspire to inculcate this outlook in others, elucidating how exercise routines can be seamlessly transposed into everyday life. This has been an immensely gratifying expedition, and I am privileged to be able to perpetually pursue my passion.
Undeniably, my odyssey has been characterised by metamorphosis, empowerment, and transcending barriers. I aspire to continue inspiring others to embark on their personal journeys of fortitude and well-being, irrespective of age.
