New Traffic Control Innovations Enhance Accessibility in Portsmouth

Portsmouth City Council has recently implemented a range of innovative traffic control technologies aimed at enhancing the experience of cyclists, pedestrians with disabilities, and motorists in the city.

The installation of low-level cycle signals with early release functions at numerous junctions across Portsmouth will benefit cyclists. Positioned at a lower level than traditional traffic lights, these signals aim to improve visibility for cyclists, thereby increasing their safety on the roads. With the implementation of this technology, cyclists will have a head start over other vehicles at junctions, allowing them to move ahead and become more visible to motorists. The system has been trialed and proven to be significantly safer than the previous method of cars and bikes setting off simultaneously.

Those on foot, as well as those in wheelchairs and mobility scooters, will now have the ability to activate pedestrian crossings using a smartphone app. The SmartCross+ technology, installed at various busy crossing points in the city, allows for touch-free and remote activation of pedestrian crossings. Developed by Smart Technology, the SmartCross systems offer a quick and easy retrofit to existing pedestrian crossing units, with the added benefit of increased accessibility for all pedestrians.

The SmartCross app, available for download from the Apple App Store and Google Play, provides a convenient and user-friendly means for pedestrians to navigate the city’s crossings. The technology not only improves the efficiency of pedestrian crossings but also contributes to a more inclusive urban environment.

Motorists will also experience benefits from the new traffic control systems, with improved traffic light visibility and advanced detectors that monitor pedestrian and cyclist activity at junctions. These enhancements aim to provide more intelligent traffic control, ultimately improving the flow of traffic, particularly during peak hours.

Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson, Cabinet Member for Transport, expressed his satisfaction with the new accessibility options, emphasizing the council’s commitment to improving travel conditions for all individuals in Portsmouth. He highlighted the importance of these advancements in making road crossings safer and more convenient, especially during busy periods.

The introduction of these cutting-edge traffic control technologies reflects the city’s dedication to fostering a more accessible and inclusive urban environment for all residents and visitors. By prioritizing the needs of cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists, Portsmouth City Council continues to demonstrate proactive and forward-thinking urban planning initiatives.
