The field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is advancing rapidly, prompting growing concerns about its potential dangers. Recent news has brought attention to the link between AI and election security, leading to worries about its impact on voters.
International technology instructor Michael Tritthart has drawn a comparison between the power of AI and atomic energy, highlighting the crucial decision about whether to use it for good or harmful purposes. The introduction of a new tool called SORA by OpenAI, which allows the creation of realistic videos and imaginative scenes, further demonstrates the expanding abilities of AI.
However, Tritthart has advised a cautious approach, proposing a 72-hour rule for evaluating and understanding the consequences of new advancements before accepting them as factual. The complexity increases when considering the protection of elections, as demonstrated by the recent signing of a “Tech Accord to Combat Deceptive Use of AI in 2024 Elections” by major technology companies.
Despite these proactive measures, deceptive use of AI is already in progress. In a disturbing incident in January, robocalls used AI to mimic the voice of President Joe Biden in an attempt to discourage voters in New Hampshire. This alarming development prompted News4JAX to speak with Chris Chambless, the Clay County Supervisor of Elections, who expressed concerns about the potential threats AI poses to election security.
Chambless highlighted his concerns, such as the possibility of robo-calls spreading false information about voting details or making incorrect statements about an individual’s registration status. However, he also emphasized the strict measures in place to ensure secure voting, including a transparent process open to public scrutiny, stringent controls, and video monitoring of key activities. In addition, election machines undergo rigorous logic and accuracy tests, and vote counts remain completely offline, with no connection to the internet.
To further strengthen the integrity of the electoral process, Chambless has advocated for community involvement by encouraging volunteer participation, thereby ensuring a collective responsibility for maintaining the integrity of the democratic exercise.
It is clear that AI is exerting a significant impact across various sectors, necessitating a careful approach to embracing its innovations. Therefore, it is crucial to verify credible information in the ever-evolving technological landscape.
The far-reaching influence of AI on our lives and the societal landscape underscores the need for proactive preparedness in anticipating and managing potential disruptions, requiring a collective effort to navigate the impending transformative impacts of this advanced technology.
By maintaining vigilant scrutiny and taking proactive measures, we can harness the potential benefits of AI while mitigating the associated risks.
