The United Arab Emirates and Baden-Württemberg in Germany Collaborate for Sustainable Industrial Development

In a momentous stride towards sustainable industrial progress, the Ministry of Industry & Advanced Technology of the UAE and the State of Baden-Württemberg in Germany have officially signed a Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI). This historic agreement was formalized during the Munich Security Conference in Germany and was attended by prominent dignitaries from both regions. His Excellency Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, reaffirmed the UAE’s dedication to global climate action and cooperation on decarbonization initiatives.

The JDI outlines a comprehensive partnership focused on promoting supply chain resilience, advanced technology, and decarbonization efforts. Key areas of collaboration include artificial intelligence, smart manufacturing, smart health, and aerospace. The scope of the agreement encompasses both public and private sector entities, strengthening bilateral relations and promoting environmentally conscious industrial investments under the Make it in the Emirates initiative.

Dr. Al Jaber emphasized the UAE’s proactive involvement in international collaborations, citing the country’s leadership at COP28 and the launch of the Industrial Decarbonization Roadmap. This roadmap, unveiled at COP28, lays out a phased approach to reduce carbon emissions by 93% by 2050, utilizing solutions such as CCUS (carbon capture, utilization, and storage) and clean energy across challenging industrial sectors.

The partnership aligns with Operation 300bn and the UAE Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative, with a focus on joint investments and technology solutions that bolster the supply chain resilience of both nations. The collaboration also seeks to enhance capacity building and skill development through joint research and internships in priority projects.

Her Excellency Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism of Baden-Württemberg, stressed the significance of establishing an efficient hydrogen economy for the region’s future-proofing. Recognizing the UAE’s potential for economic cooperation, Baden-Württemberg established a business representation office in the UAE in 2022, providing support for companies entering the UAE and Gulf region markets.

Her Excellency Thekla Walker, Minister of the Environment, Climate Protection, and Energy of the State of Baden-Württemberg, underscored the role of hydrogen in achieving a climate-neutral industrial society. The collaboration aims to establish a common market for green hydrogen, leveraging the UAE’s ideal conditions for solar-based green hydrogen production.

In conclusion, the Joint Declaration of Intent symbolizes a strategic and comprehensive partnership between the UAE and Baden-Württemberg, promoting innovation, sustainable industrial development, and environmentally friendly practices. This collaboration sets the stage for a concerted effort to address climate change and advance technological solutions for a greener future.
