Celebrating the Best of Indian Entrepreneurship: EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2023

The esteemed EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2023 has been recently conferred upon Vellayan Subbiah, the Chairman of Cholamandalam Finance and Executive Vice Chairman of Tube Investments of India. This prestigious accolade serves as a testament to his exceptional contributions to the business world.

A distinguished panel of judges, led by K V Kamath, Former Chairman of ICICI Bank, praised Vellayan Subbiah for his bold strategies in revitalising existing businesses and pursuing new opportunities through acquisitions and diversification. These audacious moves not only propelled the growth of his group companies to unprecedented levels but also resulted in a fourfold increase in shareholder value within a span of just three years.

As a result of this remarkable achievement, Vellayan Subbiah has been selected to represent India at the EY World Entrepreneur of the Year Award (WEOY) in Monte Carlo from 4-7 June 2024, an event that brings together the brightest entrepreneurial minds from around the globe.

In addition to Vellayan Subbiah’s success, Natarajan Chandrasekaran, the Chairman of Tata Sons, was honoured with the Special Jury Award for his exceptional leadership of the Tata Group and his significant contributions to nation-building. The judges highlighted his strategic initiatives to strengthen core businesses, foster group synergies, and focus on scaling operations, which ultimately led to a remarkable doubling of the Group’s market capitalisation from $170 billion to an astounding $365 billion.

The 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Venu Srinivasan, Chairman Emeritus of TVS Motor Company, in recognition of his decades of entrepreneurial excellence in revolutionising the Indian two-wheeler industry. EY commended him for embodying principles of quality, innovation, and sustainable practices, which have earned him several prestigious accolades including the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards.

Rajiv Memani, Chairman and CEO of EY India, extended his sincere congratulations to all the winners and finalists of EOY 2023, emphasising their status as true symbols of entrepreneurial excellence. He commended their ability to transform businesses and create new markets, highlighting their remarkable scale, customer-centric approach, and innovative business-building strategies.
