Samsung Launches Groundbreaking CXL DRAM Technology for AI Memory Chips

Samsung Electronics is poised to introduce groundbreaking technology for Compute Express Link (CXL) DRAM next month, in a bid to enhance data processing speed and bolster its position as a leader in the AI memory chip market. This strategic move comes as the company faces stiff competition from SK hynix and global foundry giant TSMC, who are also making significant advances in the AI memory chip and semiconductor manufacturing sectors.

In a bid to further solidify its position in the AI memory chip market, Samsung will showcase its cutting-edge CXL DRAM technology at the MemCon 2024 global semiconductor conference in Silicon Valley. The company plans to present its vision for CXL DRAM, which is regarded as the next-generation technology of high-bandwidth memory (HBM). The technology is expected to enable high-performance computations for AI, machine learning, and big data applications by facilitating seamless communication and collaboration among various devices.

Samsung’s executive vice presidents, Han Jin-man and Choi Jin-hyeok, will deliver keynote speeches at the event, shedding light on the innovative potential of CXL technology in the AI era. The company’s efforts are projected to have a significant impact on the semiconductor industry, with market research firm Yole Group forecasting the global CXL market to reach approximately $15 billion by 2028.

Notably, Samsung has already made significant strides in the CXL market, having been the first to introduce CXL DRAM in 2021. The company is also gearing up to launch CXL 2.0 DRAM in the second quarter of this year, further solidifying its stronghold in the industry.

In addition to its advancements in the AI memory chip sector, Samsung has also expanded its collaboration with chip design company Arm in the foundry business. This strategic partnership will see Samsung optimizing Arm’s system-on-chip (SoC) design assets for its latest gate-all-around (GAA) process technology, aiming to enhance technical competitiveness. GAA technology represents a next-generation semiconductor core innovation that promises to elevate data processing speed and power efficiency.

Kye Jong-wook, head of foundry design platform development at Samsung, expressed the company’s enthusiasm for extending its partnership with Arm to deliver the next generation Cortex-X CPU, which will empower mutual customers to create innovative products.

Samsung’s concerted efforts to advance its technology and form strategic partnerships in the AI memory chip and foundry sectors underscore its commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving semiconductor industry. As the demand for AI semiconductors continues to grow, Samsung’s innovative strides in CXL DRAM technology and GAA process technology position the company as a frontrunner in shaping the future of AI memory chips.
