Bengaluru Entrepreneurs: Decent and Tech-Savvy

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has articulated her observations regarding the business community in Bengaluru, noting that entrepreneurs in the city exhibit a more reserved and decorous nature compared to their counterparts in Delhi and Mumbai. Sitharaman pointed out that these entrepreneurs often express criticisms of the government, primarily through social media platforms rather than direct interactions.

In an interview with The Indian Express, Sitharaman highlighted the reluctance of business leaders in Bengaluru to engage with the government in Delhi, stating, “They barely listen to us, it’s fine, but we can’t be bothered to go to Delhi. But because these business leaders are very tech-savvy, they’ll go about tweeting – hey central government, you’re not doing this. You don’t take care of Bengaluru…we are the next California.”

While acknowledging the concerns expressed by the business community, Sitharaman assured that the central government is dedicated to supporting startups. She emphasized that the challenges faced by a few startups should not be seen as reflective of the entire startup ecosystem and reaffirmed the government’s willingness to provide assistance.

Recognizing the contributions of Bengaluru taxpayers, Sitharaman commended their role in bolstering the country’s economy. During the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the upcoming complex HONGIRANA for Income Tax officers, she expressed gratitude towards the taxpayers for their unwavering support.

Sitharaman also underscored the investments made by the central government in Bengaluru, citing the presence of the Department’s central processing centre in the city. She emphasized the significance of the faceless income tax system in advancing ease of doing business and highlighted the ways in which government funds are reinvested in the state for infrastructure development and connectivity.

The minister’s remarks shed light on the nuanced dynamics between the government and the business community, emphasizing the importance of leveraging technology for constructive engagement and the mutual benefit of all stakeholders.
