Chile Aiming for 3 to 4 New Lithium Projects by 2026, Says Finance Minister

Chile is currently in the process of planning for the establishment of three to four new lithium projects by 2026, as announced by the Minister of Finance, Mario Marcel, during the weekend. This initiative is part of Chile’s strategy to increase state control over the production of lithium, a crucial component for electric vehicle batteries.

As the world’s leading copper producer and the second-largest lithium producer, Chile introduced a policy last year to strengthen its supervision of the strategic metal. Marcel’s statement was made following a meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who was visiting Chile at the time.

Yellen utilized her visit to tour the facilities of Albemarle, a U.S.-based lithium producer in northern Chile. She expressed her support for strengthening the relationship between the United States and Chile, highlighting the potential advantages for both nations and the positive impact it could have on energy security and climate objectives.

Currently, Albemarle and SQM are the only major players in Chile’s lithium production sector. Investors are eagerly anticipating clear guidance from President Gabriel Boric’s administration, particularly regarding the national lithium strategy as the government aims to establish public-private partnerships to develop the country’s lithium resources.

Chile’s mining minister recently announced the government’s intention to finalize lithium exploration tenders for private companies within the first quarter of this year in an effort to revitalize the industry. As part of this revitalization push, Chile’s state-owned copper mining company, Codelco, has been selected to represent the Chilean state in the new public-private model for lithium.

This collaboration signifies a significant advancement for the Chilean government, which has long sought to expand its involvement in the lithium sector. The plan has the potential to unlock substantial opportunities and drive growth in the industry.

The visit by U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen underscores the growing global significance of lithium production and the pivotal role that Chile is positioned to play in the supply chain. As Chile continues to make progress in its lithium policies and partnerships, it is attracting international attention and recognition from major economies such as the United States.

The development of new lithium projects in Chile aligns with the broader global focus on renewable energy and sustainable technology, with electric vehicles serving as a key driver in reducing carbon emissions and addressing climate change. The strategic efforts and collaborations being undertaken by Chile reflect the country’s commitment to making significant contributions to global sustainability goals.

In conclusion, the plans to expand Chile’s lithium projects and the partnerships being forged with key international players indicate a promising and exciting future for the lithium industry in Chile. These developments reaffirm Chile’s position as a major player in the global lithium market and its dedication to driving progress in sustainable energy technologies.
