Siemens Mobility, a prominent player in the engineering industry, has announced a substantial investment of £100 million in a state-of-the-art facility designed to drive the future of rail technology. The new centre, situated in Chippenham, Wiltshire, will focus on infrastructure manufacturing, digital engineering, and research and development (R&D). It is anticipated that this facility will replace a nearby factory by the year 2026.
The strategic positioning of the new facility will make it a key player in Siemens’ future rail technology projects, serving as an efficient site for the construction of the next generation of conventional and digital rail signalling and control systems in the UK.
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt underscored the significance of this advancement, commenting, “This digital technology will enhance the safety, reliability, and connectivity of our railways, and drive sustainable opportunities in higher-paid jobs and exports as part of our plan to grow our economy.”
Siemens is dedicated to ensuring a smooth transition to the new facility for its workforce, with approximately 800 local employees set to be transferred. The company has provided assurance that this transition will not cause any disruption to production.
Rob Morris, the joint CEO of Siemens Mobility in the UK & Ireland, conveyed enthusiasm about the investment, stating, “This £100 million investment is a strong commitment to Chippenham and our country.” He added, “Siemens Mobility’s Chippenham site, along with our 30 sites across the country, has been transforming rail travel and transport in Britain – and it will continue to do so with cloud-based rail technology connecting the real and the digital worlds, digitalising rail.”
The existing factory, renowned for its design, manufacturing, and delivery of signalling and control systems, has played a vital role in major projects such as the Elizabeth line, North Wales Coast railway, Birmingham New Street station, and numerous global schemes.
