Entrepreneurship is a vital driver of innovation, employment generation, and economic growth. It also plays a key role in fostering social inclusion by creating opportunities for individuals to establish businesses in their communities, contributing to social and environmental progress.
However, certain social groups, such as women, ethnic minorities, young people, migrants, and individuals with disabilities, face unique barriers to entrepreneurship. It is essential to develop and implement initiatives that promote inclusive entrepreneurship to reduce these barriers and improve outcomes for underrepresented groups.
The current entrepreneurial landscape in the UK does not provide equal access to entrepreneurship for all, especially for individuals from underrepresented groups. By promoting entrepreneurship among these groups, the economy can benefit from the creation of new businesses, employment opportunities, and income generation.
To address these challenges, the Charter for Inclusive Entrepreneurship has been established as a proactive step towards creating an inclusive ecosystem that supports individuals in establishing and maintaining successful and sustainable businesses, regardless of their personal backgrounds.
The Charter sets out fundamental principles for establishing and supporting an inclusive entrepreneurship ecosystem across five key areas:
1. Promoting diverse role models within the enterprise ecosystem
2. Providing inclusive support for entrepreneurs
3. Facilitating lifelong learning through entrepreneurship education
4. Ensuring equal access to enterprise finance
5. Implementing measurable targets for inclusive enterprise policies and procurement practices
Organizations that endorse the Charter commit to:
– Implementing the principles outlined in the Charter
– Displaying the Charter mark on promotional materials and websites to demonstrate their commitment
– Actively promoting the Charter within their supply chain and encouraging suppliers and clients to adopt its principles where relevant
– Recruiting diverse workforces to ensure gender, ethnic, age, and ability/disability diversity
– Ensuring that staff are well-versed in potential service uptake barriers based on gender, race, and disability, and integrating these considerations into service delivery, design, promotion, and practical arrangements
– Providing staff with equality, diversity, and inclusion training in line with best practices
The Charter for Inclusive Entrepreneurship was developed by Dr. Lorna Treanor and Helen Burkinshaw, Policy Officer for The Women’s Organisation. Through purposeful promotion of inclusive entrepreneurship, the Charter aims to lay the foundation for a more equitable and flourishing enterprise ecosystem in the UK.
