A study carried out by Canadian researchers has delivered concerning information to individuals who enjoy sugary drinks. The study has revealed the potentially harmful effects of consuming just two cans of sugary drinks per week. According to researchers from Laval University in Quebec City, the consumption of two 355-ml cans of sugary drinks per week is sufficient to negate the cardiovascular benefits gained from regular exercise.
Published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the study analysed health data from over 100,000 adults over the age of 30, spanning a period of 30 years. The findings indicated that the detrimental effects of sugar-sweetened beverages cannot be offset by the average recommended amount of exercise, which is approximately 150 minutes per week. The lead author of the study, Lorena Pacheco, stressed that although consuming two sugary drinks every seven days may appear to be relatively low to many consumers, it still presents significant health risks.
Professor Jean-Philippe Drouin-Chartier highlighted that while physical activity reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease associated with sugar-sweetened beverages by 50%, it does not completely eliminate it. He also expressed concerns over the marketing tactics employed for these drinks, which often depict active individuals consuming them and may create the impression that sugary drink consumption has no adverse effects on health if a person is physically active.
The researchers are urging consumers to consider eliminating cane and syrup-based sugary drinks entirely from their diets to mitigate these health risks. They further recommended reducing the intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and promoting the maintenance of adequate levels of physical activity, in line with existing public health recommendations and policies.
In a statement to the press, the scientists emphasized that artificially sweetened drinks did not have the same negative impact as sugary ones, based on their findings. However, they noted that water remains the best beverage option for overall health.
While the findings of the study may be surprising to many, it serves as a vital reminder of the potential health risks associated with sugary drink consumption and its long-term impact, even for those who maintain a consistent exercise routine. The research underlines the importance of making informed and health-conscious choices when it comes to beverage consumption, with the ultimate goal of safeguarding and promoting overall heart health.
