When it comes to expensive food and beverages, Hong Kong certainly stands out. From a staggering US$1,400 dinner to a bewildering US$141,000 truffle, the city has a reputation for indulging in the finer things in life. The recently opened Qura Bar at the Regent Hong Kong hotel is no exception, offering a Sazerac cocktail for an astounding price of US$230. But one must question whether it truly lives up to its high cost.
This vintage cocktail, with origins dating back to 1838, is crafted with a 1969 Vallein Tercinier L’Erotique LOT 69 Grande Champagne Cognac – a true symbol of luxury. The Sazerac Company even went so far as to trademark this exceptional concoction in 1900, cementing its status as a revered beverage. Despite its exorbitant price, one must consider if it is genuinely worth it.
As we observed Gennaro Pucci, the bar manager, expertly prepare and garnish the Sazerac with an orange twist, the simple presentation of the drink seemed almost underwhelming for such an exclusive cocktail. However, after tasting it, we were pleasantly surprised. The smooth texture and lingering finish of the drink left us craving more, with the bitters and absinthe delicately lingering at the back of the palate. The flavours of orange and Cognac danced on our tongues, leaving a pleasant aftertaste of warm orange biscuit.
Yet, at US$230 per glass, one may question if the steep price is justified, especially when a nearby bar offers a similar off-menu Sazerac for only HK$138. While the Qura Bar undeniably provides a luxurious experience, the decision ultimately boils down to personal preference and budgetary constraints.
And let’s not overlook the delightful bar snacks, such as the house-made goose rillette and Iberico ham with tomato bread, that perfectly complement the vintage Sazerac. It is truly a sensory delight, but choosing any other flavours might detract from the unique experience of this exclusive drink.
Ultimately, the decision to indulge in the US$230 Sazerac rests solely with the consumer. With a wide array of high-end wines and spirits available at Qura Bar, there is no denying that it offers an unparalleled experience in the heart of Hong Kong. So, is it worth it? Perhaps not for everyday indulgence, but for a rare and luxurious treat, the answer may be closer to yes than one might initially think. Cheers!
