Is Modern Technology Really Making Life Easier?

3 min read

In today’s rapidly evolving society, technology appears to have permeated every facet of our daily existence. From financial transactions to retail purchases, and even the placement of food orders, it seems almost impossible to evade its influence. However, does this influx of technology genuinely simplify life for all?

As an individual who exhibits a predilection for conventional methods, I find myself pondering whether I am forfeiting the advantages of contemporary technology. I remain steadfast in the writing of checks to settle my financial obligations, abstain from utilizing debit cards, and steadfastly avoid self-service checkouts. I even eschew the inclusion of GPS in my vehicle, choosing instead to print directions for excursions. Moreover, the possession of the latest mobile device is of little interest to me.

Although resistant to change, I cannot help but observe the widespread acceptance of technology in the day-to-day routines of those around me. Whether it pertains to monetary transactions, financial management, or home security, technological innovation remains pivotal.

Consequently, the lingering question is: why do I exhibit such an adherence to tradition? Ultimately, I adhere to the age-old adage, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Despite acknowledging the necessity for certain updates over time, I am content with adhering to conventional practices.

The Frustrations Associated with Modern Means of Payment

During a recent visit to Arizona, I encountered considerable frustration when utilizing my credit card at several establishments. I was unaware of the emergence of contactless payment technology, leading to difficulties when using my chip-embedded card. Relying on cashiers for assistance only added to my inconvenience, notably impinging upon my overall experience.

The predicament extends beyond payment methods and encroaches upon the procurement of food at fast-food establishments. A trip to Idaho saw me grappling with self-service kiosks at a McDonald’s. The absence of a readily available cashier to facilitate the ordering process exacerbated my frustrations.

The Decline of Cash Transactions

It has become increasingly apparent that there has been a decline in the acceptance of cash transactions by numerous businesses in recent years, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. While I sympathize with the apprehensions surrounding currency handling during the pandemic, I am inclined to believe that these concerns have somewhat diminished, with businesses exploiting the situation to transition exclusively to card-based payments.

Despite the reliance of many individuals on credit cards and technology to navigate their daily routines, I remain a proponent of the continued use of cash and the issuance of payments through traditional checks. Accordingly, whilst acknowledging this as a conventional inclination, I persist in seeking out cashiers when shopping or dining.

In conclusion, despite the inexorable advancement of technology, there remains great value in adhering to traditional methods. Whether in the form of cash transactions or the patronage of cashiers, the conventional approach often proves more preferable. Fostering a harmonious balance between technology and tradition remains pivotal in our contemporaneous era.
