Indian Army Establishes Special Unit to Focus on Next-Gen Military Technologies

The Indian Army has recently announced the establishment of a new elite unit known as the Signals Technology Evaluation and Adaptation Group (STEAG). This specialised unit has been assigned the important task of researching, evaluating, and adapting advanced communication technologies such as 6G, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and quantum computing for military purposes.

In accordance with army officials, the main objective of the STEAG unit is to explore and develop various wired and wireless communication systems, taking into consideration the evolving nature of modern warfare.

Officials at the level of Brigadier involved in the project have shown their enthusiasm, stating that STEAG will lead the way in integrating specialised technology and collaborating with academia and industry to identify suitable defence applications. They have also emphasised the unit’s focus on critical technology domains including mobile communications, software defined radios, electronic warfare systems, 5G and 6G networks, quantum technologies, AI, and machine learning.

Moreover, the elite unit will be responsible for technical scouting, evaluation, development, and management of core ICT solutions, as well as providing user interface support through the maintenance and upgrade of contemporary technologies available in the environment.

The decision to establish STEAG comes in response to Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande’s stress on the necessity of acquiring new technologies in order to effectively adapt to the changing nature of warfare. The new unit aligns with the principles of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Start-Up India, with the aim of bridging the gap between the armed forces, industry, and academia.

It is expected that the establishment of this Centre of Excellence will significantly contribute to fostering self-reliance in high-end communication technologies, which have historically been dominated by select countries with advanced economies and research ecosystems.

A senior military official has highlighted the importance of advanced communication technologies in military operations, stating that superior communication capabilities can provide a crucial advantage in modern warfare. The official has also emphasised the significance of incorporating new equipment to ensure seamless communication support to units and formations during operations.

The creation of STEAG is a significant step towards strengthening the Indian Army’s capabilities in the digital domain, and is expected to play a pivotal role in embracing technological advancements to stay ahead in the fast-evolving landscape of modern warfare.
