The Cheltenham Township Police in Pennsylvania are implementing innovative methods to recruit potential candidates for the upcoming police academy test. Instead of relying on traditional approaches, the department has utilized electronic road signs and QR codes to target a broader audience of potential applicants.
Strategically placed electronic road signs outside the Cheltenham Township Police Department, near Salus University and in front of Arcadia University, are intended to capture the attention of the 30,000 to 40,000 daily commuters along Old York Road and Easton Road. Lieutenant Andrew Snyder of the Cheltenham Police disclosed, “We aim to attract between 180 and 200 applicants for the upcoming test scheduled for March 30.”
While a college degree is not a requirement for applicants, Lieutenant Snyder highlighted the high percentage of degree holders within the department, with over 65% of the police force possessing college degrees, and 10% holding master’s degrees or higher. This underscores the department’s emphasis on higher education and its potential advantages for individuals pursuing a career in law enforcement.
Cheltenham patrol officer Kyle Turner, a criminology degree holder, spoke highly of how his education has benefited his role, providing him with financial stability and job security.
The department’s innovative strategies extend beyond electronic road signs, with smaller stickers featuring QR codes placed on marked vehicles to further attract potential candidates. Lieutenant Snyder expressed the department’s use of various recruitment tools, including social media, to ensure widespread visibility of their opportunities.
Patrons of Michael’s Restaurant, a popular establishment within the local community, expressed their support for the initiative, acknowledging its potential to reach individuals during their daily routines and inspire younger people to consider a career in law enforcement.
With the next academy class scheduled to commence in July 2024, the Cheltenham Township Police are optimistic about achieving their hiring goals through these innovative recruitment methods.
