The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship has announced a new and exciting technology partnership with Google Cloud in preparation for its upcoming race at São Paulo’s Sambadrome in Brazil. This collaboration, which is expected to span multiple years, is aimed at enhancing both on-track and off-track performance through the utilization of a range of Google Cloud technologies.

The partnership will involve the use of scalable cloud infrastructure, data analytics, and generative artificial intelligence tools in the GENBETA Race Car Development Programme, with the goal of advancing the GenBeta Programme and pushing the boundaries of motorsport technology.

In addition to this, Formula E and Google Cloud will also focus on expanding their fanbase by analysing extensive data sets of fan behaviour, preferences, and demographics using Google Cloud technologies. Furthermore, the two parties will work together to expand access to Formula E’s Girls on Track programme, which is designed to provide young women with opportunities to pursue careers in motorsport, as part of their commitment to sustainability.

CEO of Formula E, Jeff Dodds, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “Our multi-year technology partnership with Google Cloud is clear evidence of the scale of our ambition in establishing Formula E as the world’s most innovative, exciting, and fastest-accelerating sport. We began our collaboration by setting a world record and are hugely ambitious about what’s next.”

Laurence Lafont, VP of strategic industries EMEA at Google Cloud, also expressed his excitement, stating, “Google Cloud is excited to partner with Formula E to bring the cutting edge of cloud technologies to the thrilling world of electric racing. Together, we’ll accelerate innovation on- and off-track and build the future of sustainable motorsport.”

This partnership builds upon Formula E’s existing relationship with Google Cloud, which began with Neom McLaren Formula E Team driver Jake Hughes setting an indoor land speed Guinness World Record using a gen AI ‘DriverBot’ developed by Google Cloud as part of Formula E’s race car development program. The ‘DriverBot’ combines real-time car data with historical race data, showcasing the potential of advanced technologies in enhancing motorsport.

This collaboration is set to bring about a host of technological advancements and innovations that will elevate the world of electric racing to new heights. With its focus on driving sustainability, technological advancement, and fan engagement, the Formula E-Google Cloud partnership promises to bring about new and thrilling developments in the world of motorsport.
