Amazon’s Latest Cashless Shopping Venture with Stripe Terminal

Amazon has recently announced its collaboration with Stripe Terminal for the implementation of their Just Walk Out retail technology in Australia and Canada. Stripe, a leading player in the FinTech industry, has been selected to handle payment processing for retailers utilizing the innovative Just Walk Out technology in these two countries.

The Just Walk Out technology will enable customers to enter a store simply by using their credit card or mobile wallet at the entry gate. Once inside, the technology will track the items taken or returned by the shoppers, creating a virtual shopping session. This will allow customers to exit the store without needing to wait in line, as their chosen payment method will be charged for the items taken.

In Australia and Canada, merchants will be utilizing the WisePad3 reader by Stripe Terminal, which will be affixed to physical entry gates. Upon a guest’s departure from the store, Stripe will automatically process the payment for their purchases. Additionally, Stripe Connect will ensure that payments from shoppers are efficiently routed directly to the businesses utilizing Just Walk Out technology.

According to a press release, Amazon will benefit from Stripe’s API reliability, which consistently exceeds 99.999% uptime, and high authorization rates even during peak shopping periods. Eileen O’Mara, Chief Revenue Officer at Stripe, expressed her excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing the convenience of Stripe Terminal and Connect for merchants using the Just Walk Out technology. She highlighted the reliability that ensures millions of successful transactions on Amazon.

In addition to its use with Just Walk Out technology, Stripe also serves as a payments partner for various Amazon businesses, including Prime, Audible, Kindle, and Amazon Pay.

The adoption of Just Walk Out technology for retail has even reached the sports world, with Orlando City SC and the Orlando Pride incorporating this innovative solution at the INTER&Co Stadium. The Den, the official team store of both clubs operated by Fanatics, will now offer customers the seamless experience of Just Walk Out technology. Fans can enter the store, select their desired items, and exit by using their credit card at the gate, with RFID readers at the exit area capturing the selected merchandise and processing the payment accordingly.

Jarrod Dillon, President of Business Operations for Orlando City and Orlando Pride, expressed the organization’s commitment to delivering the best match day experience for sports fans at INTER&Co Stadium. The addition of Just Walk Out technology is seen as a significant enhancement that simplifies the check-out experience and allows fans to quickly return to enjoying the match.

The move to integrate Just Walk Out technology follows the positive reception to grab-and-go concession changes introduced in 2023, as well as the ongoing expansion of the Orlando Made food and beverage programme.

As the partnership between Amazon and Just Walk Out technology continues to evolve, Sarah Yacoub, Head of Marketing at Just Walk Out technology, Amazon Dash Cart, hinted at exciting innovations for soccer fans in Orlando. She highlighted the use of RFID technology to streamline the checkout experience for apparel and team swag, ensuring item-level accuracy for retailers.

Amazon’s collaboration with Stripe Terminal for the implementation of Just Walk Out technology demonstrates an ongoing commitment to enhancing customer experiences and staying at the forefront of technological innovation in retail.
