The Future of Solar Farms: A 10-Year Extension Sparks Controversy

2 min read

A proposal has been put forth to extend the operation of a 10-megawatt solar farm at Hawthorn Farm in Scropton Road, Derbyshire for an additional 10 years. The GSI Hawthorn Limited, formerly known as GS Vogt Limited, is seeking permission to continue the operation of the solar farm based on recent technological advancements that have prolonged the operational lifetime of such facilities. The proposal has elicited mixed reactions from the local residents.

The initial planning permission for the solar farm was granted by the South Derbyshire District Council in 2022. The decision on the extension is pending as it is set to be made on Tuesday, April 2, following the recommendation of council officers.

GSI Hawthorn Limited has cited recent technological advancements as the basis for their proposal, arguing that these developments enable solar farms to generate electricity for longer periods and contribute substantially to government renewable energy targets. Conversely, 13 residents have expressed objections to the 10-year extension, raising concerns about delayed return of the land to agricultural use, potential exacerbation of flooding issues, impact on local homes and surroundings, disruption of wildlife, and preference for the land to be used for food production.

In response to the objections, council officials have emphasized the positive impact of the proposed extension, highlighting the improved efficiency of solar panels and their potential to contribute to increased renewable low carbon energy production. Furthermore, they have assured that landscape management proposals will secure the benefits in terms of landscape and habitat management for the extended operational lifetime.

The decision on whether to grant the 10-year extension to the solar farm remains pending. It is crucial for all stakeholders to consider the long-term effects of the extension and strive to find a balanced solution that aligns with the interests of the residents and the goals of sustainable energy production, as it holds significance for the local community and the environment.
