The rail operator Ferrovie della Calabria has recently announced a significant investment in hydrogen-electric train technology by commissioning three additional trains from Swiss rolling stock manufacturer Stadler. This decision builds upon the initial deal of six trains from July 2023 and showcases a substantial commitment to adopting sustainable transport solutions.
This agreement has expanded the fleet of hydrogen trains for the operator, also known as FdC, to a total of nine, with options for an additional six trains. These hydrogen-powered trains are slated to commence serving passengers on local and regional networks in Calabria by 2026.
Aristide Vercillo Martino, FdC’s Investment Manager, remarked, “The project launched in recent years as part of the ecological transition … and a total investment of more than €400 million [$434.5 million], confirms the company’s desire to become a leader in regional transport and to provide more services to users.”
Measuring 950 millimeters (3.1 feet) in narrow-gauge, these trains consist of two cars and a power pack that houses the fuel cells and hydrogen tanks. The entire vehicle, made of lightweight aluminum, spans 50 meters (164 feet) in length and is designed to enhance energy efficiency.
Each train has a total of 89 seats and can accommodate up to 155 passengers. Furthermore, it provides designated areas for wheelchair, pushchair, and bicycle access, ensuring inclusivity. Additionally, the on-board facilities, including the toilets, meet the standards for People with Reduced Mobility and Technical Specifications for Interoperability.
Stadler, as the manufacturer of these innovative trains, is also responsible for their delivery and maintenance. The company has already formed a partnership with the state of California, utilising funds from Gov. Gavin Newsom’s $10 billion zero-pollution vehicle package to purchase 10 hydrogen fuel-cell trains for $207 million.
The environmental advantages of hydrogen-powered trains are substantial, as they emit only heat and water, in contrast to regular trains that rely on dirty energy sources which contribute to environmental pollution.
Ernesto Ferraro, CEO of FdC, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration with Stadler, stating, “The additional trains ordered from Stadler, with whom we have had a fruitful cooperation for years, are a further investment towards the company’s ongoing modernisation.”
Furthermore, Ferraro highlighted Stadler’s role in improving the existing railway infrastructure and rolling stock, constructing a hydrogen plant, and modernizing the company’s technology. These efforts will support FdC in becoming a modern and sustainable transport company within the next three years.
Ferraro also recognised the critical support of the Region of Calabria and the relevant Ministries, which have made resources available to advance the industrial plan pursued by the company.
The commitment to hydrogen-electric train technology is a significant step towards building a more sustainable future for railway travel. It presents both environmental and operational benefits, and demonstrates the potential for innovative solutions to transform the transportation industry.
As we witness the development of these cutting-edge trains, we are reminded of the importance of ongoing investment in sustainable transport solutions to reduce environmental impact and pave the way for a more eco-friendly future.
