5th Annual Daily World Marathon: A Run for Fitness and Healthy Living

The 5th edition of the Daily World Marathon was held on Sunday in Chandigarh, attracting over 5,000 running enthusiasts from various parts of India and the world. The event, aimed at promoting fitness and a healthy lifestyle, featured a half marathon, a 10 km timed run, and a 5 km fun run.

The marathon was honoured by the presence of Punjab governor and UT administrator Banwarilal Purohit, who flagged off the 5 km run. The half marathon covered a distance of 21.09 km, with the route extending up to IT Park in Chandigarh. The event also included a competitive 10 km run, as well as a 5 km fun run designed to engage participants in a lighthearted and enjoyable manner.

A highlight of the marathon was Akshay Kumar’s impressive victory in the men’s 42.19 km run, clocking in at 2.22.33 seconds. This exceptional performance earned him the top position, with Kenyan marathon runner Daniel Cheruiyot securing second place and Ajay Kumar securing the bronze.

In the women’s category, Bhagirathi claimed the top position with a remarkable timing of 3.06.23 seconds. The second place was secured by Brigid Jerono Kimitwai of Kenya, while Svati Pal clinched the third position.

The marathon was organised by the Daily World Newspaper in collaboration with the UT Administration and municipal corporation, and featured a total cash prize of ₹10 lakh. It was a well-coordinated effort, with additional secretary to the governor, K Siva Prasad, and Chandigarh inspector general (IG) Raj Kumar Singh, along with several other esteemed individuals, flagging off the various runs.

The event also saw the presence of prominent personalities such as Asian marathon champion and India’s elite marathon runner coordinator Sunita Godara, and marathon runner Gaurav Karjee, who served as the race director and race coordinator, respectively.

Notable figures including Shri Vijai Vardhan, Chairman, Haryana State Information Commission, Anirudh Tewari, Director General, MAGSIPA, and Tejvir Singh, Additional Chief Secretary (Industries & Commerce), Punjab, among others, were in attendance at the event, adding to its grandeur and significance.

The 5th Annual Daily World Marathon was a resounding success, bringing together fitness enthusiasts and supporters of healthy living. It not only provided a platform for showcasing talent and sportsmanship, but also underscored the importance of physical well-being and the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle.
