Council in Wales Introduces Cutting-Edge Digital Telecare Service

2 min read

The Caerphilly County Borough Council has achieved a significant milestone with the introduction of its new digital alarm-receiving centre platform as part of its telecare service, Caerphilly Careline. This service not only caters to the residents of the Caerphilly borough but also extends its provision to other local authorities and housing associations in South Wales. The system involves the installation of a base unit in the individual’s home, which allows for remote activation through a wearable button positioned around the neck or wrist. Upon activation, the alarm links to an operator who can engage with the caller to evaluate the necessary support.

In anticipation of the impending transition from analogue to digital phone networks in the UK by 2025, adjustments to the system were required. In addition, further improvements to the Caerphilly Careline are in the works, including the replacement of telecare alarms.

Councillor Elaine Forehead, Cabinet Member for Social Care at Caerphilly Council, emphasized the vital role of Caerphilly Careline in promoting safe and independent living for individuals in their residences. Furthermore, the service offers reassurance to families, as they are aware that their loved ones have access to around-the-clock support. She also highlighted the significance of utilizing UMO, the new digital platform, to ensure that the delivery of this essential service is underpinned by the latest technology. Councillor Forehead conveyed her appreciation to all those who contributed to the success of this initiative.

A recent study that focused on the preferences for technology-enabled care services and devices, including telecare, unveiled the nine most valued aspects that individuals seek but are not always able to access.
