SK Keyfoundry, located in South Korea, has recently introduced an upgraded 0.13㎛ BCD process that will empower automotive power fabless companies to develop high-performance automotive semiconductor products. This unveiling comes at a time when the automotive power semiconductor market is experiencing growth due to the increasing demand for electric vehicles and in-vehicle electronics.
The enhanced 0.13㎛ BCD process provided by SK Keyfoundry has successfully met the requirements of AEC-Q100’s Grade-0, the reliability test standard for automotive electronic components. This qualification makes it suitable for the production of high-performance and high-reliability automotive semiconductors that can withstand an ambient operating temperature of up to 150℃. Additionally, the process features high-voltage devices of up to 120V and implements insulation technology above 15KV, allowing for the design of high-voltage and high-reliability products such as BMS IC, Isolated gate driver IC, DC-DC IC, and CAN/LIN transceiver IC for use in electric vehicles.
In addition to its high-voltage capabilities, the enhanced process also supports high-density Flash memory IP which can be utilised in automotive semiconductors requiring MCU functionality, such as Motor Driver IC, LED driver IC, Sensor controller IC, and Power Delivery controller IC. Notably, the Flash IP can be programmed up to 100,000 times, making it suitable for high-performance products that necessitate frequent data changes.
The automotive power semiconductor market is projected to experience significant growth in the coming years, with market research firm OMDIA forecasting a substantial increase from $20.8 billion in 2023 to $32.5 billion in 2028, at a CAGR of 9.3%. The proliferation of electric vehicles and the rise in in-vehicle electronics are expected to be major driving forces behind this expansion.
SK Keyfoundry’s commitment to providing high-quality process technologies for automotive semiconductors has enabled the company to pass production quality audits for automotive components from top-tier global automotive vendors. This has positioned the company to offer foundry services that meet the rigorous quality requirements of its customers, while also ensuring high process reliability suitable for use in vehicles.
Derek D. Lee, the CEO of SK Keyfoundry, expressed the company’s dedication to technology development, stating, “Despite the limited number of foundries offering automotive power semiconductor processes, we have continued to improve our automotive high-voltage BCD processes with high performance. With more than 10 years of mass production experience with major automotive fabless companies and the quality of our mass production, we will strongly pursue our business strategy to secure a solid growth base in the 8-inch automotive power semiconductor market in the future.”
