Supporting the Culinary Scene in Wales: Inception of the Food and Drink Festivals and Events Fund

The Welsh Government has recently announced a new funding opportunity designed to enhance food and drink festivals and events across Wales. This initiative, in the form of a small grant scheme, aims to elevate the industry and raise awareness of Welsh culinary offerings among visitors.

With a substantial allocation of £192,000, the fund seeks to foster collaboration between the Welsh hospitality sector and food and drink businesses. Its primary objectives include promoting local produce, incorporating Welsh food products in menus and stores, and enhancing industry value.

The grant scheme is accepting applications until 7 June 2024 and invites interested organisations to submit their proposals for consideration.

In his announcement of the scheme, Huw Irranca Davies, the Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs, expressed enthusiasm for the prospects ahead. He emphasized the fund’s support for festivals and events with innovative approaches to showcasing Welsh food and drink. As Wales continues to witness the rise of new, high-quality culinary offerings, Davies is keen on providing backing to events that aim to spotlight the excellence of the country’s gastronomy.

Furthermore, Davies outlined the scheme’s goal of forging stronger connections between food festivals and events, agriculture, food processing, tourism destinations, and the food service sector. By doing so, he envisions not only leveraging economic benefits but also offering visitors a distinctive and high-quality cultural experience.

In addition to launching the Food and Drink Festivals and Events Fund, the Welsh Government has extended the call for support from the public. By contributing the equivalent of the price of a cup of coffee per month, individuals can aid in the establishment of an independent, not-for-profit, national news service for the people of Wales.

As influential figures in the culinary world, each and every one of us has a role to play in promoting and preserving our nation’s rich food culture. The new fund offers an avenue for industry players to participate in this meaningful endeavour, ensuring that Welsh food and drink continue to thrive and be celebrated.
