Francis Ahovi, a respected Security Expert and the Executive Secretary of Global Security for Africa Research and Good Governance (GLOSARGG), has put forward a proposal for the integration of advanced technology into voter registration processes in the country. This proposal extends to various exercises carried out by the Electoral Commission (EC).
Ahovi’s proposal is prompted by the recent incident involving Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits, which went missing and were subsequently found at the EC headquarters. In a statement released by GLOSARGG on Sunday, 12 May 2024, Ahovi stressed the need for the EC to invest in software that would eliminate the requirement for eligible voters to endure adverse weather conditions in order to register.
According to Ahovi, the use of such software would facilitate eligible voters to register from the comfort of their homes or workplaces through a short code. He also emphasized that this technological advancement would not only decrease the high costs associated with the current voter registration system, but also guarantee greater transparency in the data collected.
In addition to his technological recommendations, Ahovi lent his support to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and concerned citizens in their call for the EC to provide the serial numbers of the BVR kits being utilized in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise. He conveyed his belief that the responsibilities of the EC have dwindled over the years, and that there is a need for the institution to re-establish its reputation to avert potential turmoil in the country.
The full statement issued by GLOSARGG is as follows:
“The Electoral Commission should seriously consider the integration of advanced technology into voter registration processes. This would greatly benefit eligible voters, as it would eliminate the need to endure unfavorable weather conditions in order to register. The introduction of software that allows registration through a short code would offer a more convenient and efficient alternative. In addition to its convenience, this technology would also result in cost savings and improved transparency in the data collected. It is vital that the EC takes concrete steps to address the concerns raised by the opposition and citizens. The recent incidents involving the missing and found BVR kits at the EC headquarters highlight the need for the institution to regain public trust and confidence.” – Francis Ahovi, Executive Secretary of GLOSARGG
In conclusion, the proposal presented by Francis Ahovi underscores the significance of harnessing advanced technology to streamline and enhance voter registration processes. As society becomes increasingly reliant on technology, the incorporation of such advancements in electoral procedures is a natural and necessary progression.
