From Vegetarian to Quail Lover: A Texan’s Culinary Journey in Coimbatore

Growing up in Texas as a vegetarian posed numerous challenges for me. Despite my family’s commitment to a meatless lifestyle driven by a dedication to the ethical treatment of animals, I often felt like an outsider in a state renowned for its BBQ culture. Instead of indulging in traditional Texan fare, I found myself consuming baloney sandwiches and tofu hot dogs, struggling to navigate through social gatherings and school events.

However, my life took an unexpected turn when my parents made the decision to relocate to India, and we settled in Coimbatore. The adjustment period was difficult, and I exhibited rebellion in various forms, including a reluctance to embrace the local cuisine. Nevertheless, my parents persisted, and gradually, I found myself appreciating the diverse and flavourful South Indian dishes on offer. The burst of mustard seeds in pongal, frothy filter coffee, buttery dosas paired with sambar, and fiery garlic chutney were revelations for my palate.

Eventually, I entertained the idea of challenging my longstanding vegetarianism by expressing my desire to sample meat. Surprisingly, my parents were understanding and supportive of my decision. Their response afforded me the freedom to explore without the burden of judgement. The shift from vegetarianism to embracing non-vegetarian cuisine was a significant turning point for me.

The pivotal moment arrived when I tasted quail for the first time. The blend of spices, the tender meat, and the overall experience led me to the realisation that I need not adhere to societal expectations. I discovered a sense of belonging in Coimbatore’s culinary landscape, an experience that deepened my appreciation for vegetarian delicacies even more.

The traditional Kongunadu cooking style of Coimbatore, characterised by the use of turmeric, gingelly oil, millets, and free-range country chickens, became an integral part of my life. Street food vendors offering delights such as kambu dosas and vazhaipoo vadai encapsulated the essence of the city’s culinary scene. The familiarity and warmth of Coimbatore’s food made me feel at home in a new environment.

Upon my return to Texas, I developed a newfound appreciation for the state’s BBQ culture, thanks to my newfound love for diverse and richly flavoured dishes. This newfound appreciation even led me on a road trip across the USA in a quest to explore and savour soul food.

As I contemplate the possibility of reverting to a meatless diet, I am met with opposition from friends in both the USA and India. Nevertheless, I have learned to embrace my choices without succumbing to societal pressures. My journey has taught me to value and respect diverse culinary preferences, shaping me into the food enthusiast I am today.
