Assembly House Norwich: A Jewel in the Heart of the City

The esteemed East of England Tourism Awards 2023-2024 has bestowed the title of Small Serviced Accommodation of the Year upon the Assembly House in Norwich. Situated in the heart of the city, this historic establishment has long been lauded for its sophistication, charming bedrooms, and iconic afternoon teas.

Originally designed by the renowned architect Thomas Ivory in 1754, the Assembly House has become a beloved institution in Norwich. Chef director Richard Hughes, who was honored with the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Norfolk Food & Drink Awards 2023, recounted his journey of founding the business 15 years ago.

In collaboration with fellow director Iain Wilson, Richard embarked on a mission to create an establishment that epitomizes traditional hospitality, offers exquisite cuisine, and showcases stunning surroundings at every turn. Their vision was to establish a place that they themselves would relish visiting in one of the UK’s most breathtaking cities.

The hotel is home to 15 delightful boutique bedrooms, many adorned with authentic antiques, and some featuring gardens and balconies. Its restaurant presents a delectable array of breakfast, Beforenoon Tea, lunch, and the renowned afternoon teas. Richard proudly proclaimed that the Assembly House strives to be the premiere destination for afternoon tea, offering not only the classic version but also unique themed options.

In addition to its accommodation and dining offerings, the hotel also hosts a variety of events, from weddings to conferences, and is the founding location of The Richard Hughes Cookery School, which was honored with The British Cookery School of the Year award. Richard conveyed the team’s unwavering commitment to delivering customers with a truly enchanting experience during their visit.

The Grade I listed building of The Assembly House is owned by The Assembly House Trust, a registered charity. The trust is tasked with the restoration and upkeep of The Assembly House for the people of Norwich. Richard and Iain oversee the commercial operations, and the rent they pay directly contributes to the maintenance of the building.

Following the recognition as Small Serviced Accommodation of the Year, Richard expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from their devoted patrons. He underscored the importance of their customers’ narratives, which reaffirmed the special place that The Assembly House holds in the hearts of many.

Despite the challenges encountered by the hospitality industry in recent years, Richard and the team are resolute in their commitment to continue delivering exceptional experiences and innovating for the future. With exciting plans on the horizon, including special themed events and surprises, The Assembly House is dedicated to upholding its reputation as a paragon of excellence in Norwich.
