A Personal Journey: From Job Loss to Magazine Ownership

3 min read

Following the closure of NZ Lifestyle Block, a publication familiar to many, the magazine’s former editor, Michael Andrew, was confronted with a significant decision. In retrospect, Andrew reflects on the circumstances surrounding his acquisition of the magazine and the consequential path to ownership.

It was a defining moment when I found myself seated at my desk, facing two open windows on my computer screen. One window exhibited a compilation of job opportunities for a standard communications role, while the other window highlighted an article detailing the struggles confronting the publishing industry due to mounting paper and postage expenses.

The recent revelation of my employer’s resolution to cease operations and discontinue the publication of numerous magazines, including my very own – New Zealand Lifestyle Block, instilled a sense of uncertainty regarding my professional future. The news had instigated a palpable level of apprehension within me.

A dilemma presented itself as I contemplated my alternatives, with the looming apprehension of potential unemployment and fierce competition for the limited available positions. Conversely, an opportunity surfaced – the prospect of becoming the proprietor of a cherished magazine amidst a media industry predicament.

Shortly thereafter, following consultations with trusted confidants, family members, and esteemed mentors, I arrived at the determination to procure the magazine. It was a decision rooted in passion rather than pragmatism, signifying the inauguration of a new chapter in my life.

My involvement with NZ Lifestyle Block dates back to 2022, during which time I have been bestowed with the privilege of immersing myself in an assortment of compelling narratives originating from the remote countryside of New Zealand. The mission of the magazine has since evolved to serve as a platform for spotlighting the commendable endeavours of individuals and communities dedicated to sustainable living, food production, and stewardship of the land.

Through my role as the editor, I have come to realise that the terminology “lifestyle block” encompasses a diverse array of land and food-oriented initiatives, ranging from market gardening to regenerative farming. It has been my privilege to illuminate these accounts and share them with our readers.

An aspect of my role that has been particularly enriching is observing the blossoming of a resolute “back-to-the-land” movement in New Zealand. This movement has seen individuals and communities adopting a proactive stance in addressing issues pertaining to land, food, and energy, free from the constraints imposed by larger commercial farms.

Despite the formidable challenges confronting the magazine industry in recent years, owing to mounting production costs and diminishing profit margins, my outlook for the future of print media remains sanguine. The revitalised interest in tangible artistic mediums and the premium placed on quality, curated content may serve to catalyse a renaissance within the magazine sector.

The encouraging endorsements I have received from our dedicated subscribers and supporters have served to validate my decision to embark upon this new path. Their words of affirmation and appreciation have provided me with a wellspring of motivation as I labour to ensure the sustained success of NZ Lifestyle Block.

As I embrace this new mantle as a magazine publisher, I am sincerely appreciative of the opportunity to pursue my passion, engage with inspiring individuals, and deliver meaningful narratives to our readership. This voyage is merely commencing, and I am resolute in my commitment to bolstering the diverse fabric of the media landscape in New Zealand.
