Chinese New energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer BYD has officially unveiled its latest fifth-generation DM (dual mode) hybrid technology for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. This groundbreaking technology touts an impressive driving range of 2,100 kilometers.
This innovative technology situates BYD’s plug-in hybrid vehicles at the forefront globally, establishing new benchmarks and accomplishing remarkable performance metrics. Through this latest innovation, BYD has achieved a thermal efficiency of 46.06 percent and a fuel consumption rate of 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers even when in an electricity-deficit state. Furthermore, the comprehensive range of 2,100 kilometers further solidifies BYD’s position as an industry leader.
Chairman of BYD, Wang Chuanfu, made this significant announcement during a highly-anticipated launch event in Xi’an, the capital of Northwest China’s Shaanxi province. It was an electrifying evening as he unveiled the remarkable progress in the realm of hybrid technology.
The impressive driving range of 2,100 kilometers was based on vehicles with fully charged batteries and a full tank of petrol. The vehicles that are fitted with this cutting-edge technology are primarily powered by high-capacity power batteries, offering unparalleled efficiency and performance.
During the event, BYD also took the opportunity to introduce two groundbreaking car models that are powered by the newly unveiled technology – the Qin L DM-i and the Seal 06 DM-i. These state-of-the-art vehicles consume only a third of the fuel used by traditional cars while tripling the driving range. The price range for these innovative models falls between 99,800 yuan ($14,000) and 139,800 yuan, making them an attractive and accessible option for consumers.
Wang expressed unwavering confidence in BYD’s ability to lead the global charge in plug-in hybrid technology. He emphasized the company’s commitment to driving the green transformation of the global auto industry, highlighting BYD’s pivotal role in shaping the future of sustainable mobility.
As a testament to their success, the Shenzhen-based carmaker has achieved significant milestones, having sold over 3.6 million plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to date. This remarkable achievement demonstrates BYD’s unwavering commitment to advancing the adoption of eco-friendly transportation solutions.
Against the backdrop of this momentous unveiling, the broader context of the electric vehicle market in China cannot be overlooked. According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the production and sales of new energy vehicles in the country saw a substantial increase in the first four months of 2024. The production and sales climbed to 2.985 million and 2.94 million units, marking year-on-year growth of 30.3 percent and 32.3 percent, respectively.
This impressive growth underscores the rapidly evolving landscape of the electric vehicle industry, further validating BYD’s strategic foresight and innovative prowess. As the demand for sustainable transportation solutions continues to soar, BYD’s cutting-edge technology heralds a new era of efficiency, performance, and environmental sustainability in the automotive sector.
