The government’s dedication to bolstering the digital economy through platforms such as the Industrial Revolution (4IR) Project is a commendable step in the right direction. It is imperative to establish an environment that nurtures learning and innovation. In this regard, the private sector plays a pivotal role in training and enhancing the skills of young individuals for the digital economy.
However, it is not solely about cultivating a proficient workforce; it also entails empowering our youth to leverage technology to construct a better world.
A prime example of this ethos is Telkom’s Centres of Excellence (CoE). This post-graduate research programme encourages young scientists and engineers to cultivate high-level ICT skills while also augmenting South Africa’s competitiveness on the global stage.
Another crucial facet is entrepreneurship. Telkom’s FutureMakers Programme bolsters social entrepreneurs who are effecting change in their communities. Its Township Innovation Incubator nurtures township SMMEs using ICT innovation to address community challenges, providing young entrepreneurs with the resources they require to actualise their business concepts.
Nonetheless, empowerment extends beyond career-development resources; it necessitates a strong educational foundation. The Telkom Foundation, established in 1998, is committed to investing in education to effect meaningful change in South Africa’s communities. Outcomes have indicated remarkable performance among learners supported by the Telkom Foundation, particularly in fields like computer science and engineering.
These initiatives signify a concerted effort to empower our youth and prepare them for the future. They furnish a model for businesses to contribute to societal transformation, particularly in the digital economy.
However, the responsibility does not solely lie with the private sector. It demands a collective effort from all stakeholders – government, educators, parents, and the youth themselves. Together, we must uphold the endeavors of our young people and nurture their potential.
