The Liverpool Life Sciences UTC and The Studio Liverpool recently had the opportunity to visit Liverpool John Moores University’s City Campus for a day of engaging activities where they were able to gain valuable insights from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology experts. This visit was part of LJMU’s participation in the Horizons project, aimed at supporting SMEs in adopting the latest technologies and inspiring the next generation of industry experts.

During their visit, the Year 12 students had the chance to explore the Byrom Street Building and experience the use of cutting-edge technologies. This included computerized manufacturing tools used in the aerospace industry, virtual reality goggles for civil engineering, forensic science software, and insights into research on autonomous robots, 3D mapping, and digital sensors across various industries.

One of the students shared, “The trip was eye-opening and inspiring. We got to see first-hand how VR is used in the engineering industry, and we were amazed by the robotics labs, especially the robotic dog Spot. The staff were approachable and willing to offer support, making it a valuable experience for us as aspiring engineering students.”

Dan Howard, from Liverpool Life Sciences UTC and The Studio Liverpool, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “It was really refreshing to see a university and a set of academics who have a similar outlook as to ours. I am really happy that we have begun a meaningful partnership with the university and the team at LJMU and that we can build on this helping to provide a set of learners who have a really relevant skill set to meet the demands of the local labor market.”

The visit also highlighted the alignment between the skills being taught at the UTC and the Studio Liverpool and those being emphasized by LJMU, indicating a vision to prepare students for the future local workforce. Furthermore, LJMU’s involvement in the LCR Horizons project demonstrates its commitment to fostering economic growth and innovation in the region through practical, hands-on assistance.

The Horizons project, which is supported by the UK government and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, aims to provide support to over 100 local SMEs. Experts from LJMU’s Faculty of Engineering and Technology, the Virtual Engineering Centre at the University of Liverpool, and the SME Productivity and Innovation Centre at Edge Hill University will collaborate to bring cutting-edge innovations to the region.

The visit not only provided valuable insights to the aspiring students but also reflects LJMU’s commitment to nurturing talent and driving innovation in the region. It is a testament to the university’s dedication to engaging with the local community and providing opportunities for young learners to develop relevant skill sets for future career success.
