Innovative Clothing Technology to Tackle India’s Climate Challenges

The government is poised to revolutionise the clothing industry with a new technology that will transform the way individuals dress for varying seasons. The textiles ministry is in the process of developing phase-changing clothing technology that will enable the same set of clothes to be suitable for all seasons, addressing the diverse climate challenges in India. This groundbreaking initiative aims to provide a versatile solution for the varying weather patterns in India, enhancing comfort and reducing the need for multiple sets of clothing for different weather conditions and environments.

The new all-weather clothing, developed through a collaboration between the textiles ministry and premier tech and fashion institutes, will feature indigenous encapsulated phase change material (PCM)-based activewear. This advanced technology utilises phase-changing materials to effectively regulate temperature, offering enhanced comfort and efficiency. The PCM-based textiles will benefit various fields, including sports, homewear, and protective textiles, as well as army personnel working in extreme weather conditions across different states in India.

The National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) has approved three projects focusing on the development and application of PCM, with a total project value of ₹25.5 crore. The Indian Institutes of Technology, Delhi and Ropar, along with the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Telangana, will collaborate on the project to develop textiles that meet the outlined requirements. This innovative clothing technology will enable garments to regulate temperature effectively, providing warmth in cold conditions and a cooling effect in hot environments.

Phase-changing materials are highly efficient for temperature control, as they release or absorb significant amounts of energy during phase transitions. By incorporating PCM into clothing, garments can maintain an optimal temperature, thereby providing a versatile solution for India’s diverse climate challenges.

The use of smart fabrics that change their properties in response to temperature changes will lead to innovative and dynamic designs, adding a futuristic and functional aspect to fashion.
