Bioluminescent Mushrooms Discovered in Ranipuram Forest, Kasaragod

2 min read

In a recent scientific breakthrough, a rare species of bioluminescent mushrooms has been uncovered in the verdant forests of Ranipuram, Kasaragod. These exceptional mushrooms emit a vivid bright green light, lending an air of enchantment to the nocturnal scenery of the forest.

The discovery of these bioluminescent mushrooms, scientifically termed filoboletus manipularis but more commonly known as electric mushrooms, was the outcome of a thorough micro-fungal survey. This survey was a collaborative endeavour between the Kasaragod division of the Kerala Forest and Wildlife Department and the Mushrooms of India Community.

Under the leadership of the Kasaragod Divisional Forest Officer K Ashraf and a team of devoted scientists and researchers including Dr. Jinu Muraleedharan, Dr. Santhosh Kumar Kookal, KM Anoop, Sachin Pai, and Poorna Sajna, the day and night survey in the Ranipuram forest yielded fascinating results. The team identified a diverse array of fifty mushroom species, with the bioluminescent mushrooms taking precedence as the most notable discovery.

Of particular interest is the discovery of the non-bioluminescent variety of the same species, filoboletus keralensis. Furthermore, the survey also brought to light hygrocybe mushrooms, which bear a striking resemblance to plump tomatoes and are characterized by their vibrant red, yellow, and orange hues. Importantly, the majority of mushroom varieties thrive during the monsoon season.

It is imperative to note that the filoboletus manipularis species discovered in Ranipuram is not suitable for consumption. Dr. Jinu Muraleedharan, the leader of the research team, emphasized the remarkable diversity of mushroom species in Ranipuram, underscoring the area’s immense ecological richness. He advocated for further research expeditions in the region to fully comprehend its ecological significance and potential.

This groundbreaking discovery offers insights into the remarkable biodiversity of the Ranipuram forest and underscores the necessity for ongoing exploration and conservation efforts in this ecologically crucial area. As researchers delve deeper into the mysteries of the natural world, each new discovery serves as a testament to the awe-inspiring beauty and complexity of our planet’s ecosystems.
