Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang Province, is showcasing its advanced power supply reliability amidst the escalating electricity demand this summer.
As the hot summer season intensifies in China, the imperative for cities to secure stable power supplies grows. Hangzhou, home to over 12 million permanent residents and more than 1.8 million market entities, encounters the challenge of ensuring a consistent power supply, given its natural obstacles such as high urban load density, frequent rainstorms and flooding, and a significant proportion of mountainous areas.
Nevertheless, Hangzhou has taken the initiative in implementing a low-voltage power supply reliability extension management plan throughout the province. The city has developed a burgeoning distribution network comprising photovoltaics, energy storage, and charging stations to effectively cater to its users.
With the average annual power outage time per household in the core urban area being less than 30 seconds, and less than 10 minutes for the entire city, Hangzhou’s power supply reliability rate has reached an impressive 99.9982%. This level of reliability is on par with that of global metropolises such as New York, Vancouver, Tokyo, and Paris.
Furthermore, the dependable electricity supply played a pivotal role in the successful hosting of the 19th Asian Games in 2023. High-tech enterprises in the city, including Reprogenix, which primarily focuses on cellular medical research, also heavily rely on a stable power supply for their operations.
This substantial enhancement in power supply reliability can be attributed to the comprehensive, precise, and data-driven management initiatives implemented by the State Grid Hangzhou Power Supply Company. The company has augmented its investment in the power grid, bolstered its manpower, equipment, and technical support capabilities for uninterrupted power operations, and harnessed innovative technologies such as drone automatic inspection and live-line robot autonomous maintenance.
Hangzhou has also been a trailblazer in China in reform and innovation to enhance power supply reliability. It was among the inaugural pilot cities in China for the development of distribution network automation systems and has made significant headway in seamless fault handling.
Looking ahead, Hangzhou aims to establish a comprehensive demonstration zone for a modern intelligent power distribution network utilizing digital platforms and smart AI technologies. This endeavour will enable Hangzhou to realize its vision of becoming a world-class socialist, modern, and international metropolis by 2035.
With its state-of-the-art power supply reliability and dedication to urban development, Hangzhou serves as a role model for cities worldwide.
