Siemens Drives the Transformation of Berlin’s Sustainable City of the Future

Siemens AG is currently leading in the field of urban redevelopment and sustainable city planning with its ambitious €4.5 billion project to revitalize Siemensstadt Square, a historic industrial site in Berlin, into a sustainable city district of the future. The company has committed to investing €750 million into this groundbreaking project, which is scheduled for completion by the year 2035.

Encompassing an area of 76 hectares, Siemensstadt Square stands as one of the largest urban redevelopment sites in Europe and lays the foundation stone for the development of a carbon-neutral urban district. Through collaborative efforts with various partners, Siemens aims to establish an inclusive urban district that integrates production, research, learning, and living within a single location.

Siemens technology will serve as the cornerstone of this novel neighbourhood, with the company intending to leverage digital twin technology to optimise the planning, construction, and infrastructure of the urban district. This intelligent technology will enable the early identification of challenges and the development of efficient solutions, ultimately creating a sustainable and smart city district.

Matthias Rebellius, Managing Board Member of Siemens AG and CEO of Smart Infrastructure, expressed his pride in the implementation of Siemens technology in the district. He considers Siemensstadt Square to be a global model for successful urban development and a blueprint for the sustainable transformation of former industrial zones.

Siemens will employ digital products to modernise and retrofit existing infrastructure within Siemensstadt Square. The company’s digital building platform, Building X, will facilitate the digitalisation, management, and optimisation of building operations. Additionally, Siemens plans to develop new office buildings using the Building X Energy Manager and integrated on-premise building management system, Desigo CC, to optimise building operations and monitor energy consumption.

In its efforts to secure a carbon-neutral future, Siemens is piloting the Energy Digital Twin to simulate the energy consumption of future phases at Siemensstadt Square. The company is also collaborating with local partners to develop Europe’s largest wastewater heat exchanger and provide the district with 100% CO2-neutral heating and cooling.

Siemens is not only transforming the infrastructure and energy usage within Siemensstadt Square but also redefining the means of transportation within the district. The company prioritises public transportation, walkability, and bikeability, as well as promotes e-mobility by equipping up to 50% of parking spaces with electric charging points.

The innovative approach taken by Siemens towards the sustainable development of Siemensstadt Square is a compelling example for other metropolises around the world. The project illustrates that by merging the real and digital worlds, sustainable urban development is feasible, even within historically established structures.
