Celeros Flow Technology, commonly known as Celeros FT, is making strides in the endeavour to reduce the carbon footprint of offshore oil and gas operations in the North Sea. The company aims to achieve this through the provision of two new water injection packages, complete with electric motors and variable frequency drives (VFDs), for the AKER/OKEA power from shore project off the coast of Norway, in partnership with Aker Solutions.
The underlying objective of this venture is to replace gas turbine-driven units with a more sustainable energy source, capitalizing on Norway’s abundant renewable electricity resources. This transition is regarded as a pivotal step in mitigating the impact of climate change, resulting in a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of the customer. The contract for this project has been awarded to the ClydeUnion Pumps brand of Celeros FT, with the skidded packages to be assembled at their flagship site in Glasgow.
Tommy Kassem, Chief Commercial Officer of Celeros FT, conveyed his thoughts on the significance of securing this contract, stressing the critical nature of decarbonisation in the global energy supply chain. He underscored Celeros FT’s steadfast commitment to supporting both new and existing operators as they embrace alternative, sustainable energy sources.
Aker Solutions is tasked with the platform engineering and upgrading necessary for the electrification of the Draugen platform, located approximately 145 km off the coast of Norway. This ambitious project entails the replacement of the main power and water injection pump turbines with electrical power supplied from a new onshore substation. It is anticipated that upon completion in 2026, this initiative will result in a CO2 saving of up to 200,000 tonnes annually.
This bold move towards electrification in the North Sea serves as a testament to the industry’s dedication to a more sustainable future, showcasing the potential for the integration of renewable energy sources in traditional oil and gas operations. The collaboration between Celeros FT and Aker Solutions represents a step in the right direction, setting a precedent for sustainable practices in the offshore energy sector.
