These demands result in prolonged working hours, rigorous surveillance, and minimal job security, all of which adversely impact the mental and physical well-being of workers such as Mercy.
Likewise, Anita, a data annotator in Gulu, Uganda, diligently toils to annotate data for an autonomous vehicle firm, meticulously scrutinizing hours of footage for signs of driver distraction. Her role requires sustained focus for extended periods, all for an hourly remuneration that barely surpasses a dollar. The work environment is oppressive, with staff subject to continual surveillance and limited opportunities for self-direction, leading to a combination of tedium and unease.
The reality of the AI revolution is far removed from the image of elegant offices and glamorous technological innovations. The bulk of the labor involved in training AI – data annotation – is carried out in locations such as Nairobi and Gulu, where employees confront inhumane working conditions, extensive hours, and minimal job security. The global market for data annotation is valued at billions of dollars, with the demand for curated data escalating daily as AI technology becomes increasingly prevalent in various sectors.
It is imperative for consumers of AI products to acknowledge the human toll behind the technology they employ. The workers propelling the AI revolution are scattered across the world, linked to consumers and organizations in a tangled web of data and capital.
