Beware of the Pitfalls: The Costly Mistake Many Drivers Make at the Petrol Station

Motorists are reminded to exercise caution at the petrol station to avoid a costly error that could result in significant financial repercussions. This simple but potentially disastrous mistake, known as ‘mis-fuelling’, affects a staggering 150,000 drivers in the UK every year, as reported by the RAC.

Putting the incorrect type of fuel into a vehicle can lead to extensive damage to the engine, with the AA warning that some manufacturers may require the replacement of certain parts, resulting in expenses exceeding £5,000. In addition, draining the fuel tank alone can cost a few hundred pounds.

Tom Banks, from Go Compare, emphasized the ease with which this mistake can occur, especially for those who have recently changed cars, are using someone else’s vehicle, or are preoccupied with other matters while at the petrol station. He advised drivers to review their insurance cover, as they may be covered for mis-fuelling under their breakdown policy if it is not explicitly excluded.

If a petrol vehicle is filled with diesel, drivers may experience excessive smoke from the exhaust and sluggish acceleration, as well as potential warning lights or engine failure. On the other hand, mistakenly filling a diesel car with petrol can result in symptoms such as engine misfiring, stalling, and substantial smoke from the exhaust. It is worth noting that the diesel fuel nozzle is typically too large to fit into a petrol car, making mis-fuelling less likely in this scenario.

In the event that mis-fuelling is realized while still at the petrol station, drivers are advised to put the car in neutral, seek assistance to move the car to a safe area, and then call for professional help.

It is crucial for drivers to remain vigilant and exercise care when refuelling their vehicles to avoid the potential financial consequences of mis-fuelling.
