The Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) has opened an exhibition titled “Of Stone and Steel. A Voyage into the World of Urbex” featuring over 20 photographs by Her Royal Highness Princess Sofia of Romania. This exhibition, showcasing abandoned structures across Romania, debuted in Bucharest and is set to travel to ICR London later this fall. In collaboration with Jean Milligan and Irina Andreea Cristea, Princess Sofia selected sites that highlight Romania’s industrial heritage, particularly in the Brașov region, and the cultural significance of buildings in Maramureș. The exhibition aims to promote awareness of these historical places and prevent their erasure from memory. “As my father, King Michael, said: ‘We cannot have a future without respecting our past,'” Princess Sofia stated during the opening. The exhibition runs until September 28 at the ICR in Bucharest, and will then be displayed at the “Constantin Brâncuși” Gallery in London from October 29 to November 15. Princess Sofia, an acclaimed photographer influenced by her father’s work, also runs an art project called “Romania, a Celebration,” which captures the nation’s diverse cultural narratives through photography. The exhibition is the fourth in this series.
