The redevelopment of London’s Olympia events centre by Heatherwick Studio and SPPARC is nearing completion, with a focus on transforming the area into a vibrant public destination. This renovation will see the Victorian exhibition halls enhanced and new facilities such as restaurants, bars, offices, two hotels, a theatre, and a live music venue being constructed atop the existing structure. The project aims to increase accessibility and community engagement, providing public areas that were previously non-existent. Elliot Postma of Heatherwick Studio highlighted that the original design did not cater well to the local community, describing the site as a ‘fortress’ with limited public access. The new design intends to create an elevated plaza and public pathways leading into the heart of the site, enhancing both visibility and interaction with the space. Plans include elevated routes offering panoramic views of the city, promoting a more inviting atmosphere. SPPARC’s Trevor Morriss emphasised the ambition behind this project, asserting that it aims to uphold the legacy of the original structure while adapting to modern exhibition needs. The anticipated completion of the new amenities is set for summer 2025, promising to redefine how exhibitions and cultural events are experienced at Olympia.

The Olympia events centre, built in 1886, has long served as a venue for exhibitions but has struggled to integrate itself with the surrounding community. This redevelopment project is spearheaded by Heatherwick Studio and SPPARC to rejuvenate the site and make it more accessible and appealing to the public. The design focuses on utilising the space efficiently, while retaining the historical elements of the building, creating a balance between the past and future of the venue.

The transformation of Olympia aims to enhance community access, promote cultural engagement, and create new public spaces atop the historic venue. By addressing past shortcomings in the building’s design, Heatherwick Studio and SPPARC seek to redefine Olympia as not just an exhibition hall but a lively cultural hub. The anticipated opening of new functions in 2025 promises to reinvigorate the site and its role within the community.
