The Face magazine’s extensive influence will be celebrated at a National Portrait Gallery exhibition from 20th February to 18th May 2025. Curated by Sabina Jaskott-Gill, it features iconic photography and tracks the magazine’s role in shaping youth culture and beauty trends over four decades.

The National Portrait Gallery in London will host a major exhibition celebrating The Face magazine’s influence from 20th February, tracing its vibrant history over the past four decades. Since the 1980s, The Face has significantly shaped youth culture and the zeitgeist, capturing the spirit of the times with its innovative portraiture and fashion photography.

Curated by Sabina Jaskott-Gill, the exhibition presents a chronological showcase of key photographic works, including highlights from Ray Petri’s ‘Buffalo’ group in the 80s and Gemma Booth’s iconic portrait of Ms. Dynamite from 2001.

Jaskott-Gill noted, “The Face has been a trailblazing title since 1980, not just documenting the contemporary cultural landscape, but playing a vital role in inventing and reinventing it.” She expressed gratitude to co-curators Lee Swillingham and Norbert Schoerner for their contributions to the exhibition.

The exhibition will highlight beauty trends and the evolution of technology, showcasing early prints that centred models and how modern techniques like Photoshop transformed imagery. It reflects both changing fashions and artistic expressions from The Face’s extensive history.

The exhibition will open on 20th February and continue until 18th May 2025, offering an in-depth look at the magazine’s lasting impact.
