The play ‘From Here On’ will be screened on March 19 at the Electric Palace Cinema in Harwich, with a subsequent exhibition at Harwich Arts and Heritage Centre from March 20-29. The project involved local children and is tied to the region’s historical role in the Kindertransport, with discussions planned following the screening.
A London theatre producer has shared insights into the upcoming film screening and exhibition of the play ‘From Here On’ in Harwich. This production, created by Ipswich’s Gecko Theatre and London’s Good Chance Theatre, impressed audiences on Harwich Yachting Beach last year. The performance highlights Harwich’s historical significance as a refuge for children escaping Nazi persecution, marking the first ferry arrival of child refugees on December 1, 1938.
Scheduled for screening at the Electric Palace Cinema on March 19, the event will include a discussion with the creative team and young cast members. Producer Sophie Ignatieff expressed her joy in working with 30 local youths from Harwich, Colchester, and Tendring, who engaged in a long-term project from June to September.
The outdoor performance, described as physical theatre, provided a unique experience for participants. Ignatieff emphasized that the children, showcasing a diverse background—both experienced and beginners—fully embraced this opportunity. The film alternates between Harwich and London performances, reflecting the project’s thorough rehearsal process.
Sophie found it rewarding to delve deeper into Harwich’s Kindertransport history, receiving support from the Kindertransport Memorial Association. The play features five children’s stories, including one on the Kindertransport, highlighting its contemporary significance in addressing current refugee issues.
Good Chance Theatre, founded in the Calais Jungle refugee camp, regularly focuses on stories of people seeking sanctuary. Ignatieff noted the show’s accessibility by performing outdoors, thereby attracting a wider audience without the constraints of traditional theatre. Their positive engagement in both Harwich and London has been encouraging, and the play received remarkable audience responses.
Additionally, there will be a free exhibition at Harwich Arts and Heritage Centre running from March 20-29, exploring project themes and the Kindertransport history. Free tickets for the film screening can be booked at Eventbrite.
The film and exhibition of ‘From Here On’ in Harwich aim to highlight the historical importance of the Kindertransport, featuring young performers from the local area. Engaging discussions around the play will reveal contemporary relevance while celebrating community involvement. A related exhibition will further educate the public about these vital themes, demonstrating the importance of empathy in today’s context.
