The TCS London Marathon is on track to set a record as the largest marathon in the world, potentially surpassing the New York Marathon’s finishers. With over 840,000 applicants for 2025, it is already the most popular marathon, having raised £1.3 billion for charities since 1981. If the number of finishers exceeds 55,646, Guinness World Records will officially recognise it as the largest ever.

Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events, acknowledged the significance of this year, stating it presents an opportunity to enhance participation. They have utilised a crowd scientist’s expertise to ensure there is ample space for runners, even with increased numbers. Brasher highlighted increasing availability for runners and the substantial funds raised for charitable causes, emphasising their drive is not just about record-breaking.

The TCS Mini London Marathon on April 26 includes 17,000 children participating in a one-mile run, marking its 40th anniversary as possibly the biggest timed kids’ event globally. Participation in the London Marathon has steadily grown from 6,255 in 1981 to 53,890 in 2022, reflecting its increasing inclusivity across ages, backgrounds, and abilities.

This year also sees participants such as David Stancombe and Sergio Aguiar, fathers raising money for trusts in memory of their murdered daughters. Brasher noted the emotional significance of their participation, remarking that the marathon embodies unity, emphasizing the event’s founding principles.

A celebratory event for the 45th London Marathon will occur on April 25, inviting past participants to share their experiences and contribute to a digital display by using MyLondonMarathon on social media.
