A significant exhibition featuring seven Chilean and Chilean-British artists will take place at Somers Gallery, London, from 28th March to 7th April 2025. Curated by art critic Tabish Khan, the show, titled “The Rest Has All Been Dreams”, showcases fresh perspectives rooted in both Chilean and UK cultures. It provides a platform for artists to explore issues of distance and territory through various mediums, revealing their personal experiences and the socio-political themes of their work.

The selected artists represent diverse artistic disciplines:
– Bárbara Oettinger (Digital Photography, Brighton) – Explores geography and identity through borders.
– Carola Ureta Marín (Photography, London) – Examines isolation and memory using real moss for landscapes.
– Luciana Solar Guzmán (Installation, Oxford) – Creates chlorophyll prints addressing Indigenous knowledge erasure.
– Otto Schade (Painting, London) – Blends surreal imagery with social themes in urban settings.
– Sachiyo Nishimura (Photomontage, London) – Reimagines urban landscapes through fragmented photography.
– Tere Chad (Video, Sculpture, London) – Explores memory and nature with storytelling in video performances.
– Ume Dahlia (Painting, Sculpture, London) – Addresses trauma and identity through personal narratives.

These artists respond to the theme of distance and territory, fostering discussions around isolation and community in the context of international living. The exhibition will visually communicate the cultural dialogues between Chile and the UK, broadly addressing issues like environmental concerns and power dynamics.

Somers Gallery aims to spotlight emerging artistic talents from Latin America and Britain. Established in 2015, it promotes contemporary art through diverse exhibitions. The exhibition’s title pays homage to poet Gabriela Mistral, a notable Chilean figure, linking her legacy to contemporary artistic expressions.

Organised by the Chilean Visual Arts Group and backed by the Chilean Embassy and ProChile in the UK, this exhibition illustrates the ongoing efforts to unify Chilean artists and foster collaborative art. It will include guided tours, offering audiences a deeper engagement with the exhibits.

Tabish Khan emphasised the exhibition’s exploration of cultural exchange: “Human history is a story of migration… These artists draw on their experiences… exploring connections and contrasts…” This exhibition provides a vital insight into the evolving narratives of Chilean and British-Chilean identities through contemporary art.

The exhibition “The Rest Has All Been Dreams” presents an opportunity to engage with the emerging voices of Chilean artists, reflecting on their dual cultural experiences. Through their work, they explore concepts of distance and territory, showcasing how art can articulate personal and collective identities. Supported by the Chilean Visual Arts Group, this event fosters a deeper understanding of the relationship between Chile and the UK through innovative artistic expressions.
