Kurt Cobain’s historic guitar, used during Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged performance, will be displayed at the London exhibition ‘Kurt Cobain Unplugged’. This event marks the first UK showing of the Martin D-18E guitar, which sold for over $6 million at auction in 2020. The exhibition, showcasing the significant legacy of the November 1993 performance, celebrates its release as an album in 1994, which earned Nirvana a Grammy.
Peter Freedman AM, who purchased the guitar, expressed his vision of having it tour worldwide to support performing artists. The exhibition will premiere at the Royal College of Music, curated by journalist Alan di Perna and curator Gabriele Rossi Rognoni. Di Perna remarked on the performance’s significance in rock history.
Opening on 3 June and running until 18 November 2025, the exhibition will also feature the olive-green cardigan Cobain wore during the performance, which was auctioned for $334,000 in 2019. Other items include Nirvana memorabilia, gig posters, collectible vinyl records, and pieces from Cobain’s equipment collection.
The previous Nirvana exhibition at Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture faced backlash for using the term “un-alived” instead of “suicide” to describe Cobain’s death in 1994. The controversial language drew comparisons to George Orwell’s “1984” for its manipulation of discourse. Tickets for ‘Kurt Cobain Unplugged’ will be available from 30 April.
