Kurt Cobain’s iconic MTV Unplugged guitar will be exhibited at the Royal College of Music Museum in London this summer. This 1959 Martin D-18E guitar, which sold for $6.01 million at a 2020 auction, is recognised as the most expensive guitar ever sold. The exhibition will explore Nirvana’s pivotal MTV Unplugged performance from November 18, 1993, occurring just five months prior to Cobain’s death.
The guitar was purchased by Australian entrepreneur Peter Freedman AM, who has lent it for this exhibition—the first of its kind in the UK. Freedman aims to create a worldwide tour for the instrument, supporting performing artists globally. He expressed delight at inaugurating this initiative at the Royal College of Music.
In addition to the guitar, the exhibition showcases the olive-green mohair cardigan Cobain wore during the performance, Nirvana gig posters, collectible vinyl, and a portion of a guitar soundboard. Curated by Alan di Perna and Gabriele Rossi Rognoni, the exhibition highlights Nirvana’s influential impact on rock music.
Tickets for the Kurt Cobain Unplugged exhibition will cost £5, available for bookings from April 30. The exhibition runs from June 3 to August 17, providing fans a chance to explore this celebrated rock history moment.
