A new exhibition titled “Splash! A Century Of Swimming And Style” opened at London’s Design Museum on March 28 and will run until August 17. This exhibit showcases over 200 items celebrating a century of swimming culture, highlighting activities at lidos, pools, and natural bodies of water since the 1920s.
The exhibition is curated by Amber Butchart, who explained that it explores swimming’s evolution through design. It features sections dedicated to pools, lidos, and nature, examining themes such as materials, the evolution of swimwear as fashion, and the architecture facilitating outdoor swimming spaces.
Exhibits include colourful swimwear from different decades, such as a 1950s bikini and 1980s Speedo briefs, alongside Pamela Anderson’s iconic Baywatch one-piece. Items span from 1920s rental swimwear to modern adaptive designs.
Highlighting athletic achievements, the show includes significant items from Olympians, like the first Olympic solo swimming gold medal won by a British woman and Tom Daley’s Team GB trunks.
